The 5R Restoration Model®
A Framework for Understanding the Process of Psychological Restoration
The 5R Restoration Model® is the foundational framework of Restoration Psychology®. It describes five interconnected psychological processes through which individuals move as they develop the capacity to continue living fully with peace, acceptance, and wholeness, whatever life brings.

Why the 5R Restoration Model®?
Most existing models emphasize recovery, resilience, symptom reduction, or posttraumatic growth. While each contributes valuable insight, the 5R Restoration Model® was developed to describe the broader psychological process through which individuals intentionally move from adversity toward restoration.
Rather than viewing restoration as a single outcome, the model conceptualizes restoration as an ongoing process involving five interconnected psychological capacities that influence how people understand themselves, respond to life's challenges, and continue moving forward.

The Five Processes of Restoration
A brief introduction explaining that the stages are interconnected, dynamic, and often revisited throughout life.

Recognition
Seeing What You Carry
Recognition is the process of becoming aware of the experiences, beliefs, emotions, relationships, expectations, and responsibilities that influence how we think, feel, and live. Restoration begins with honest awareness rather than judgment.

Regulation
Responding Rather Than Reacting
Regulation involves developing the capacity to respond intentionally across emotional, cognitive, behavioral, physiological, and relational domains. Rather than eliminating difficult experiences, regulation strengthens our ability to navigate them effectively.

Reframing
Understanding What You Carry Differently
Reframing involves reconstructing meaning, integrating life experiences, reconsidering identity, and developing perspectives that support continued growth. It is the process through which understanding begins to change.

Rebuilding
Building a Life That Reflects What You've Learned
Rebuilding emphasizes intentional action. As new understanding develops, individuals begin creating habits, relationships, boundaries, and life patterns that reflect their restored perspectives and values.

Restoration
Living Fully, Whatever Life Brings
Within Restoration Psychology®, restoration represents the psychological capacity to continue living fully with peace, acceptance, and wholeness regardless of changing life circumstances. Restoration is not the absence of adversity but the ongoing ability to engage life with increasing freedom, flexibility, and purpose.

Restoration Is Not Linear
The five processes are presented sequentially for clarity, but restoration rarely follows a straight path. Individuals often revisit earlier processes as new experiences emerge, relationships change, or additional challenges arise. The model reflects a dynamic process of lifelong growth rather than a series of completed steps.
